Pick of Heifer Calves
McDonnell Angus, owned by Leo and Sam McDonnell, was founded in the 1960s and has always been built on the
foundation of performance—selecting for genetic traits that are the economic cornerstone of a profitable cow herd
under our Western environments. Our cow herds are located in North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Montana.
Since 2008, our program has been committed to efficiency testing. We invested heavily in GrowSafe systems
(now Vytelle) and operated the largest privately owned individual feed intake system in North America—capable of
monitoring up to 700 animals at once. Over the years, we’ve shared this valuable data with genomic companies, the
American Angus Association, and several universities.
Our selection strategy focuses not just on feedlot feed conversion but also on Residual Feed Intake (RFI)—
identifying cattle that gain efficiently and require less feed, especially in the cow herd. Today, research and results
from long-term customers show up to 20% reductions in feed intake in the cow herd with no negative impact on
weaning weight. In fact, most report improved weaning weights. Relying on feed conversion alone leads to appetitedriven
cattle—adding RFI to our efficiency index was a natural step if we really wanted to enhance cow-herd
efficiency.
In August video sales, the first 6-weight calves sired exclusively by McDonnell bulls grossed over $3,000, and the
first 7-weight calves reached $3,080—mostly descended from Midland Bull Test and McDonnell efficiency sires.
Through all this, we remain grounded in the fundamentals: the industry depends on a healthy cow and grass.
Without that base, the rest doesn’t exist. That’s why, like many Montana performance breeders, we emphasize the
Angus cow.
We were honored to have one of the highest Functional Longevity herd bulls reported in the American Angus
Association’s first release of this new trait: CCA UNO 049 (Reg. No. 16644975)
